This is one of the better books in this series. Here are my thoughts as to the series as a whole: This series is not Kate Sherwood's best work. The characters tend to be underdeveloped as if caricatures of personality types. Later short works (available on allromanceebooks.com for free) give the back stories. Perhaps the short works should be read first to appreciate the developmental factors that gave rise to the primary character's dispositions. Even at that, it feels a little trite. I have to admit that Sherwood's skills as a writer and unexpected plot twists held my interest sufficient to read all of the books in the series. I still feel a little cheated because I know what Ms. Sherwood is capable of writing when she puts her mind to it. As a gay man in my fifties, I am growing tired of authors who make all of their characters sound as if they were blessed with the genetics to make them irresistibly attractive. I understand this is the romance genre but even those with less than gifted with perfect physiques are capable of love, sexual attraction and lasting attachments. I am just saying . . . . . All things considered, I still felt moved by many passages and the books are an easy read.

Really good insight into Justin and Dan's story. Also gives a lot of understanding on how Dan is. Short story.
I mean, I've read the first book, but I need more of Justin and Dan's story!!!

I know the beginning but this needed to be longer so I could bond more with them.

Again I didn't purchase this book from since it's free on allromanceebooks.
I loved this book even though it broke my heart reading it, this takes us back to when Dan and Justin saw each other for the first time, we see a different Dan, the Dan before Justin, this allows us to really appreciate the effect that Justin had. It's from Justin's POV and I fell in love with Justin all over again.
Again another exception to my 3 star rule, I do struggle with short books is it fair to give such a short book 4 stars even if I did really enjoy it.
I don't know why I tortured myself by reading this, like seriously, so freaking horribly depressing. I really wish the series had just been Justin and Dan's story and HEA. Evan and Jeff pale in comparison to Dan and Justin, normally I'm all for ménage relationships but no, no way is the bickering, stressful, dramatic relationship between Evan and Dan with Jeff as the referee at all better than Justin and Dan. I seriously wish this had been written at least all the way through to the first Rolex, when Justin kisses Dan but a full safe time distance from the horrible events the next year. I want more happy Justin and Dan! I really hope one day Kate might just write out an alternate ending for Dan and Justin, one where everyone is happy and healthy and alive, happily ever after til they both die of old age!
I've read the three main books that make up this series (Dark Horse, Out of the Darkness, Of Dark and Bright), so the character of Justin was pretty special even though he had only been mentioned. Getting to have Justin be an actual character was great. Heart-breaking, but great. Really happy to get to read about how Dan and he first got together.
It was lovely getting to see how the relationship from Dark Horse started. In a way I would have liked to read this one first so you got an idea of how much Dan had changed DUE to his relationship with Justin (In Dark Horse (Dark Horse Series)). Again the book is written in present tense narration which feels awkward to me. I feel like I am being kept at arms length which is frustrating as I really enjoy getting inside the characters minds as I read. Although this book isn't as emotionally charged as Dark Horse (Dark Horse Series), it does leave you with the knowledge that their love story will be tragically short so it's a bitter-sweet HEA.
